What is the significance of determining exposed surfaces when working with extrusions?

Noting exposed surfaces on prints provide key information for the extruder. This information defines the surface area to give special attention and protection to during the extrusion process for either or both cosmetic and functionality reasons.

It will also help determine which way the opening in the die is orientated. If you call out an "A" surface on exposed surfaces, the extruder more than likely will run that side facing up, rather than having exposure to kevlar rollers, belts or carbon blocks on the table.
