cost per ft estimation

cost per ft estimation

Can someone provide guidelines on how best to estimate extruded profile cost per foot for an Al profile (example a window profile) based on a few dimensional key factors, ie. solid vs hollow, size, thickness etc. Any order of magnitude cost/ft direct from a profile manufacturer that one can use for estimating purposes?

It's really simple if you have these variables:

1. lb/ft
2. cost per lb

ex. The drawing weight of an angle extrusion maybe .40 lb/ft (if you don't have this it can be calculated using autocad, normally when you get an autocad drawing for an extrusion they will have this lb/ft). The cost per lb would be $1.50. Now take the drawing weight and multiply bye the cost per lb and you should get what it will cost per foot. So in this example it should be .40 lb/ft x $1.50/lb = $0.60 per foot.

I work for an aluminum extrusion factory so if you are interested in more quotes/questions, you can email me at tonyle2000@yahoo.com.

Estimating aluminum extrusions without specific product details can be complex at times due to the wide-range of shapes, wall thicknesses, hollow profile vs. solid profile , weight per foot, price of aluminum, conversion, alloy , yields, application and tolerances (just to name a few). Tony’s response is correct, however be careful not to generalize or simplify the process, there’s more to pricing than product weight.

What does the profile look like? Where is it used?

Thanks to all for your helpful comments, but I am looking for an order of magnitude / rough cost/ft for various types of standard curtain wall profile cross sections, even a broader cost range by general class of profile would be helpful. Not to the formal quote point yet in the project.
